Jōmon Stoneware Vase — Hand-Fired Ceramic | Wabi-Sabi Home Decor

Some objects look new. This one looks like it remembers something.

Jōmon (縄文) is the name of Japan's oldest pottery tradition — vessels hand-formed from clay and fire more than 10,000 years ago. They weren't decorated. They weren't glazed. They were shaped, fired, and left to carry the marks of the flame. The Jōmon Stoneware Vase is made in that same spirit.

The surface is raw and textured — iron-rich clay fired at high heat until it darkens, blooms with rust and bronze, and hardens into something that feels genuinely ancient. No two pieces develop exactly the same character. The kiln decides.

Available in two forms:

  • Jōmon Low (Short): A wide, squat form with a compressed shoulder and small opening — grounded, meditative, built for a single stem or bare shelf. At 900g, it sits with quiet authority.
  • Jōmon Tall: A fuller, upright vessel with an open rim and generous body — the kind of form that has held things for a very long time. At 1800g, it commands a space.

Both are striking empty. Both are transformed by a single dried branch, a spray of pampas, or nothing at all.

Designed for interiors that earn their character:

  • Entryways, mantles, and open shelving
  • Studies, home offices, and reading corners
  • Dining tables and sideboards styled with raw, natural objects
  • Alongside dark wood, aged leather, linen, and stone

Material: High-fire stoneware ceramic Finish: Natural kiln-fired iron glaze — textured, matte, unique per piece Design Influence: Japanese yakishime — ancient high-fire technique, no glaze Available In: Low (H: 14.5cm · W: 20cm · Opening: 3.5cm · 900g) · Tall (H: 27cm · W: 15cm · Opening: 12cm · 1800g)

Why it belongs in your home:

  • The iron-rust finish deepens in low, warm light — extraordinary next to a candle
  • The raw texture grounds any space that risks feeling too polished or too new
  • Works in industrial, wabi-sabi, Japandi, and earthy bohemian interiors alike
  • Pair with Brooklyn Wax candles in cedarwood, smoked amber, or palo santo for a ritual that feels ancient and intentional

This isn't decor. It's an object with a point of view.

Welcome to Brooklyn Wax, a candle and lifestyle brand based in the heart of Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY. Our mission is simple: to create inspired luxury products that elevate your senses and bring joy to your everyday rituals.

Founded by creatives from the worlds of television and design, Brooklyn Wax began with a passion for crafting exceptional candles that pair beautifully with the things we love—music, travel, cocktails, and food. We believe scent is central to the sensory experience, and our candles are designed to enhance the moments that matter most.

Each of our candles is hand-poured in small batches in our Greenpoint workshop using a vegan soy wax blend, cotton wicks, and finely curated fragrances that balance sophistication with soul. Every scent is created to evoke a mood, a memory, or a place—designed to light your space and stir your senses.

As our brand has evolved, so has our vision.
